In 1998,
we received 1,040,000 pounds of food from local stores, restaurants, farmers,
hunter, fisheries, prisons, government sources and other food banks. We
distributed over 1,200,000 pounds of food - our first year for distributing
over one million pounds of food! This is an increase of 100%
in just three years!
Foods distributed include:
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is food purchased with an allocation from the state of North Carolina.
TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) is a government commodity distribution program. In 1987, the Food Bank began this program in those counties in which the Department of Social Services no longer was planning to participate. While there is no longer "butter and cheese" available, there are nutritious food items such as: Apple and Orange Juice, Frozen Turkey, Roast Beef, and Pork, Pasta, Sauce, Applesauce and other canned Fruits and Vegetables, Instant Milk and Potatoes, Figs, Prunes, and Cereal.
Salvage product is food made available to the Food Bank by other Second Harvest Food Banks and Reclaimation Centers. When a truckload is delivered to the Food Bank, it is quarantined in our Salvage Holding Area to ensure product safety. When it is deemed acceptable, it is moved to the Salvage Clean and Sort Area. There, each can, box and bag of food are inspected for food safety. If it is safe and good, it is boxed according to type of food. When a full pallet is stacked, it is moved to the warehouse floor for distribution to member agencies.
Of course, the dozens of local food drives held
every year by businesses and organizations are crucial to the stability
of the Food Pantry program. All food that is obtained through local means
stays in the Food Pantry for delivery to our neighbors in Pasquotank and
Camden Counties.
