As you can see, our Food Bank wasn't quite spared. Hurricane Irene was able to do what our insurance company said would never happen! We were lucky, however, no water made it's way inside the warehouse or offices. The Food Bank of the Albemarle distributed over 700,000 pounds of food after Hurricane Dennis and Hurricane Floyd visited our region. The storms caused horrendous damage. Homes and personal belongs were destroyed. Many residents lost income when local businesses had to shut down and recoup. To keep up with the urgent demand, our warehouse staff worked split ten-hour shifts in September and October. We distributed over 100,000 pounds of food in only two days after the storm. Because of the severe flooding, it was weeks before we reached all our agencies. But, by the end of November, we had distributed over 700,000 pounds food in hurricane disaster relief. |
Improving Service...
The Food Bank distributed 13,000 pounds of food after Hurricane Bonnie last year. Compared to the 700,000 pounds of food distributed this year, it is obvious what a difference our new Food Bank facility is making in the lives of so many people in Northeastern North Carolina. If you'd like to see for yourself, stop in when you have a little time and we'll either give you a tour and a volunteer application to fill out and return, or we'll put to work right then and there. If you'd like to see what kind of volunteer opportunities we have, please do. |
