Hunger In Northeast North Carolina
19.9%, or 61,390 residents here in northeast North Carolina are considered food insecure. This means they do not have reliable and consistent access to nutritional food. A recent report by the DC-based Food Research and Action Center showed that northeast NC ranks second only to the Bronx burrough of New York City when it comes to food hardship. (A summary of the FRAC report can be viewed under "Other Resources" in the menu to the left.)
Some might be surprised by that assertion, but - every day - the Food Bank of the Albemarle and its member agencies face the realities of hunger and poverty in our area. The variety and scope of our efforts to serve the those in need is impressive, and we could not do it without your help.
